This page covers our club policies concerning uniforms, footwear, grading, parental involvement and also codes of behaviour for athletes, supporters and parents.

More helpful information can also be found on the various season schedule pages, the starting procedures page and the joining and registration page

Uniform

singlet-sc Club colours are WHITE, RED and BLACK.

The club uniform is a white singlet with red and black logo and trim and black shorts. The cost of the singlet is $30.00 and can be purchased through the Uniform Co-ordinator.
Note: All shorts worn must be above the knee – if bike shorts are worn under your shorts they must be black or very dark blue and be above the knees.

When representing the club at interclub meetings you must be wearing the club uniform and your age patch. Club tracksuits are issued for Colgate Games and Canterbury Championships only. These are not for sale.

We offer a second hand service, so if you wish to buy or sell any items please see the uniform co-ordinators, on Sat between 1 – 1.30 pm and Wed 6 – 6.30 pm.

A Note for Parents

Club meetings are very dependant on parental involvement for their success. Your help is essential if a full range of events is to be offered for the athletes.

For example, to operate the long jump we need at least 3 – 4 adults. All field events require this number of helpers and there can be up to 4 – 5 field events operating at any one time. The track events require a starter, marshal, judges, timers and a recorder, so you can appreciate the level of parental help required.

Those of us who are involved have found it to be very rewarding and a lot of fun – you don’t need any experience just a willingness to help!

Training and Officials courses are offered if you would like to take Officiating to a higher level.

Your Grade

Age Grouping: The age is taken as at 31 December in the season of competition.

At Interclub meetings no athletes shall compete in any event outside his or her registered Grade apart from relays, where a younger athlete may be used to make up a Team. Other exceptions are the long distance events where some Grades are often combined, but all results will be recorded in age grades.

Footwear

Spiked running shoes may only be worn by competitors in the 10 and above grades. They are subject to inspection to ensure they comply with the requirements for different track or run-up surfaces and that they are not in a dangerous condition.

Spiked running shoes must be removed at the immediate completion of the athletes event and before leaving the arena, i.e. No Spiked Shoes are to be worn in the grandstand and outside the inside fence.

All shoes capable of taking spikes are banned from use for Grades 7, 8, and 9.

Athletes – Code of Behaviour

  • Take part for the ’fun of it’ and not just to please parents and coaches.
  • Abide by the rules.
  • Never argue with officials.
  • Control your temper.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and your Club Team.
  • Be a good sport.
  • Treat others as you would like to be treated.
  • Co-operate with your coach, team-mates, opponents and officials. Without them there would be no meeting.
  • Show respect for equipment and the facilities.
  • It isn’t whether you win or lose. But how you compete at the meeting.

Parents, Supporters and Coaches – Code of Behaviour

  • Remember children are involved in organised sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
  • Encourage children to abide by the rules
  • Remember that children take part for enjoyment and that winning is only part of their motivation.
  • Avoid concentrating on the talented youngsters. The “just average” athletes need and deserve equal time.
  • Focus upon the child’s efforts and performances rather than the overall outcome of the event.
  • Never ridicule or shout at a child making a mistake or losing a competition.
  • Children learn best by example. Applaud good performances by everyone.
  • Develop respect for officials and opposing coaches.
  • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
  • Show respect for equipment and the facilities.
  • Recognise the value and importance of volunteer managers, coaches and officials. They give their time and resources to provide sports activities for children.  Remember many of them are parents temporarily performing a different function.

Safety Matters

  • Please familiarise yourselves with the Club’s Health and Safety Policy which is displayed on the noticeboard on the clubrooms.
  • Always consider safety when moving about the track and beware of flying shot-puts, javelin and discus.
  • Stay off the track when a race is being held.
  • Be very careful when wearing spikes. See Spikes Section above for details on the types of spikes that can be worn on the All-Weather Track at Aorangi Park.
  • Covered footwear must be worn when throwing discus and shot-put.
  • The use of drink bottles is encouraged, but you must use your own.
  • Children are not to be in the storage shed unless accompanied by an adult.
