Athletes Win Gold

South Canterbury athletes have won two gold, four silver and two bronze at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Hastings.  Timaru Boys’ High School’s Tyler Collings won gold in the senior boys 400m in a time of 49.33 seconds.  Timaru Girls High Schools Caitlin Henderson finished first in the junior girls javelin, with a throw of 33.36m.  TBHS Willie Wright claimed silver in the senior boys javelin, while TGHS Rebecca Hodgeson won silver in the senior girls hammer throw.  Another TBHS athlete, Jonathan Lord picked up silver in the open boys 3km track walk, while Roncalli College’s Lucinda Shaw did the same in the open girls 2km track walk.  Fellow Roncalli athlete Lauren Nicol won bronze in the senior girls 400m, while Waimate High School’s Ruby Cochrane won bronze in the junior girls discus.

17 year old Tyler Collings was the standout South Canterbury performer at the Athletics Canterbury Track and Field Interclub meet at QEII Stadium in Christchurch on Saturday in hot/windy conditions.
Colling competing in the M19 400m ran an outstanding race in a new personal best time of 48.76 to finish second to World Junior Representative Alex Jordan(Tasman) who recorded a swift 47.35 with another World Junior Representative Michael Cochrane(Waikato-Bay of Plenty) third in another excellent time of 48.94.
This performance by Collings backs up his time of 49.45 recorded two weeks ago and his 22.91 last week over 200m.
Collings also finished 3rd in the M19 100m(11.53) and was a member of the Canterbury 2x100m relay that finished 2nd.
Another outstanding performance came from Rebecca Hodgson who got the Hammer out over 48m fot the first time with a throw of 48.01m which broke her Canterbury W19 Hammer record.
Michael Dewar also recorded a personal best when winning the M16 Hammer with 46.30m.(5kg)
La Toya te Kapa impressed when winning the W16 High Jump(1.65m) just narrowly missing 1.70m.
Brett Clifford continued his impressive season stepping up in the M19 1500m to finish 2nd in 4.09.61 a personal best in windy /hot conditions.The other performances to catch the eye were Lauren Nicol finishing 5th in the SW 100m(12.93) in a high quality field and Caitlin Henderson getting back to form when finishing 2nd in the W16 Javelin(32.11m)

The following South Canterbury AAC athletes have been named in 2010/11 Canterbury Track & Field Relay Squads to train toward the New Zealand Track & Field Championships to be held in Dunedin in March 2011

The first training of the Squads will be at QEII Stadium , Christchurch on Saturday 4/12/10 at 12.30 pm prior to the start of Interclub competition.
Squad members form will be monitored throughout the season to maintain each athletes position in the Squad
